Mac Pro 8 core 작년 모델을 사용하고 있습니다.
그런데 오늘 activity monitor를 보니, cpu monitoring 화면이 8개가 아니라 16개로 늘어난것을 보았습니다. 무슨 일일까요?? ^_^ iStat에서도 16개를 보여주고 있는데, 어찌 이렇게 된걸까요?

Burning Question: Why Do Ebooks Cost So Much?

당연히, 블랙뷰티(Black Beauty)처럼 저작권이 없는 고전은 킨들 스토어에서 무료로 받아볼 수 있지만 새로 나온 책 대부분은 여러분의 기대만큼 저렴하지가 않다. 어떻게 출판사들은 실제 책과 전자 책의 가격을 거의 같게 매길 수가 있을까? 실제 책은 종이에 잉크, 풀, 출력, 입고, 출하, 진열 등 독서라기보다는 실제 생활공간에 필요한 모든 것을 수반하지 않던가?

흥분 정지: 거대 출판사들 탓이 아니다. 전혀 아니다.

전자 서적 판매를 연구하는 저자이자 분석가인 셔먼(Erik Sherman)의 말이다. "출판사들이 얼마나 절약하는지 과대평가할 때가 있습니다." 그의 분석에 따르면 책 생산의 물리적인 측면은, 그 책 전체 비용의 15% 정도밖에 안 한다. 나머지는 저자와 편집자, 디자이너, 마케터, 광고주, 배급자, 판매자에게 돌아간다. 즉, $14.99 가격표에 수많은 숟가락이 놓여 있다는 뜻이다.

Hachette Book Group의 디지탈부 수석 부사장인 토마스(Maja Thomas)의 말이다. "디지탈 출판 비용이 어느 정도인지 알면 심장마비를 일으킬지도 모릅니다." 전자서적 만들기는 복제방지 소프트웨어와 디지탈 입고, 별도의 법률 비용, 안드로이드와 아이폰, 킨들 등 여러 가지 포맷용으로 만들기 위한 프로그래머의 비용이 들어간다. 원본 텍스트를 완성된 제품으로 만드는 비용에 포함되는 비용들이다.

그러니, HarperCollins의 중역을 아직 껴안을 수 없겠다. 유머 작가인 도일(Larry Doyle)의 말이다. "출판사는 전자서적 값을 적정가보다 약간 올려서 받습니다. 책에 대한 인식을 낮추기 위해서죠. 디지탈 판을 너무 저렴하게 판매할 경우, 결국 페이퍼북도 값을 낮춰야 합니다. 결국 수입의 원천을 깎는 꼴이 되지요. 그게 걱정스러운 것이에요."

물론 더 저렴하게 팔 수 있음을 증명하는 소매점들은 이미 있다. 최근 애플은 저자들이 직접 아이북스 스토어에 책을 팔 수 있도록 문을 열어 놓았다. 여기에서 애플은 30%를 벌고, 저자들은 70%를 번다. (아마존은 중개인 옵션을 제공하지만, 저자에게는 35%밖에 안 준다.) 당연히 생산된 전자책 품질이 떨어질 수 있지만 그 정도의 마진밖에 안 준다면 유명 작가들이 언짢게 여기지 않을 이유가 없다.

자가출판된 디지탈 서적이 출판업계에 어떤 영향을 끼칠지 예측하기는 아직 이르다. 현재 전자서적을 택한 독자는 1,100만 명 정도밖에 안 되기 때문이다. 그렇지만 종이 대신 패드로 독자들이 움직일수록, 출판사들은 모두를 위해 더 좋은 가격 정책이 무엇을지를 재고해야 할 것이다. 그렇지 않으면 도일의 말마따나, "당할 것이다(screwed)".

예람아빠님 만나서 맛난 점심도 먹고 복숭아 쥬스도 마시고 수다도 떨다 돌아왔습니다.
덕분에 골치아팠던 10.5로의 이주도 가능했습니다. dvd로 한 장 구워놓으시라길래, 근
처 서초 전자랜드에 들러 that's의 dvd-r dl 5장을 무려 18000원이나 주고 구입했습니
다. 인터넷 최저가가 9400원이던데... ㅡ,.ㅡ;;

암튼 파워북에 os 밀어넣고 잘 돌아가는 것 확인하고 dvd 굽기에 나섰습니다. 그런데 왠
걸요... 파워북이고 파워맥이고 아이맥이고 맥북이고... 제가 갖고 있는 것들은 한결같이
약속이나 한 듯 공미디어를 뱉어 냅니다.

검색해본즉... dvd+r dl만 지원을 하는군요. 읽기는 가능한데... 우이띠...
내일, 이마트 들러 한 장만 구입해야겠습니다. 한 5000원쯤 하지 싶은데...
그래도 아이폰4가 기다릴테니 위안을 삼습니다. :-B
